At Blessed William Howard we believe that history enables students to develop a sense of place in the world. By understanding what has happened in the past, we better understand the present. We aim to develop our historians into people that will think critically, be empathetic and want to shape the world around them.

Curriculum Overview

History in Year 7

Students will study a range of topics that will build their historical knowledge and allow them a broad overview of the world we live in.

 During this year pupils will:

  • Build up a foundation of historical knowledge.
  • Develop their skills as growing historians.
  • Explore historical debates.

Topics will include:

  • What is History?
  • Civilisations before 1066.
  • The Norman Conquest.
  • The Crusades: Why do we get it wrong?
  • Slavery.
  • The Growth of Racial Injustice after 1945.
  • Democracy.

History in Year 8 

Year 8 allows students to build on their experience and develop their skills,

During this year pupils will:

  • Explore historical debates of key events and people.
  • Hone their skills as KS3 historians.
  • Build upon existing knowledge and make links between different areas of study.

Topics will include:

  • The Industrial Revolution.
  • The impact of the Industrial Revolution.
  • The Four Humours: a thematic study.
  • Sanitation over Time: a thematic study.
  • What were the causes of World War One?
  • What was the impact of World War One?
  • What were the causes of World War Two?
  • The Holocaust.

Extra-curricular

 Each year for the 'History Around us' GCSE module we take all Y11 historians to Quarry Bank Mill, Styal. The have a tour of the Apprentice House and the working mill. Students gain an understanding of the the changes to workers lives, power sources and make comparisons to the national picture during the Industrial Revolution.
