Students Work on their Swing with Golf Pro
Blessed William Howard Y8 pupils are being given the chance to experience a less traditional PE subject this term. John Cheetham, a PGA professional golfer from Stafford Castle Golf Club and The 3 Hammers Golf Complex is coaching a group of Y8 girls for 6 sessions.
The one hour lessons allow the students to learn about the different clubs and strokes in the sport including putting and driving. It is hoped that by giving the students the opportunity to try the sport they may take it up as an extra-curricular activity. Golf is also an excellent form of exercise and good for improving hand / eye co-ordination.
John commented, “It has been a pleasure introducing these girls to the game of golf and I look forward to working with them in the future. In the six sessions I have witnessed a significant improvement within the group and it will be great for the girls to put these skills into practice when we head over to Stafford Castle Golf Club.”
The scheme is run under the Sportivate programme with the aim to give all the students a complete introduction to golf. Using the golf Xtreme equipment the tuition sessions provide the student with a wide range of information ranging from the basic set up (grip, posture), to the full swing as well as the basic rules and etiquette of the sport.
The BWH girls will then have the opportunity to try out their skills at the local golf club, Stafford Castle Golf Club. If they are interested in continuing with the sport coaching programmes these will then be made available both at Stafford Castle and the Three Hammers Golf Complex.
John Cheetham has consulted with top coaches in the UK and abroad as well as competing to Challenge Tour standard himself. John is the Academy Instructor & Junior Co-ordinator at The 3 Hammers Golf Complex and prior to this was Head Pro at The Craythorne G.C.
