Students make most of warm weather with water rocket activity

Students at Blessed William Howard Catholic High School took advantage of the recent warm spell with a less conventional water based learning activity outside.

Year 9 students spent the day designing, making and racing water-powered rocket cars as part of the school’s enrichment programme.

The activity was hosted by Wonderstruck,  a company that specialises in providing science-based workshops for schools throughout the UK.

Robin Dale (14)  and Morgan Scifo (14)

The students had so much fun, I don’t think they even realised that they were learning about physics, maths and design technology.  This sort of activity reinforces traditional learning and brings everything together in a way that really makes an impact on the students’ learning.” commented Mr Phil Smith,  Headteacher at Blessed William Howard.

Following design tweaks and student presentations on what worked well and what didn’t, the day ended with the best car from each class competing in time trials and races, with the winning team getting to keep their rocket car.

Winners:  Cavan Sutton (13) , Richard Snell (14)  & Jack Taylor (14)
